Itinerary details

Day 1: Arrival in Waikkal

You will meet the Eco Team staff along with your guide/naturalist at the pre-designated location. Waikkal is located in the Puttalam District, which falls under the dry zone category. Waikkal is in the midst of marine, coastal, estuarine, mangroves, marshland and man-made habitat systems. All of these have contributed to the avifaunal diversity visible in the immediate surroundings. Much of the avifauna is characteristically wetland and more than 60 species of birds can be observed here. Depending on your time of arrival, you can choose to rest at your hotel or do a short bird-watching trail with your personal guide.

Day 2: Waikkal - Negombo - Colombo

You will be doing a pre-breakfast Birding Tour in a boat to see the birds that inhabit this terrain. They include Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Purple Coot, Painted Stork and Stork-Billed Kingfisher.

After you join the birding boat trail at Waikkal, you will be transferred to Negombo. The evening excursion begins at 4 p.m. You will be greeted by our warm staff and briefed on the two-hour programme by your guide/naturalist before entering the wetlands. There, you will be able to witness first-hand, the reasons why the Muthurajawela sanctuary is renowned as one of the best natural habitats closer to the capital city of Colombo. Home to a dazzling array of birds, mammals, reptiles and flora, this natural haven is a hotspot for all those with a love for the wild.

It is considered one of most important places in Sri Lanka in terms of flora and is a hotspot for botanists and plan enthusiasts. According to Biodiversity reports, 209 fauna varieties were identified in the sanctuary along with 17 endemic types and 26 nationally-threatened varieties.

Day 3: Back to Colombo

The birding excursion starts at 6.00am. You will be given a short briefing on the safety, terrain and other important aspects with regard to the tour by your naturalist/guide.

You will then be taken on the trail where you will be able to spot an array of exotic birds. Sri Lanka’s bird life is nothing short of inspiring and because our tours include a personal naturalist, you are guaranteed to be inspired. Here, you might encounter Water Cocks, Eagles, Bee-Eaters, Waders, and Water Monitors as we explore the picturesque area.

By the end of this tour you will be left with nothing but endless memories of a wonderful journey that you wish had lasted more than just two days. ‘Short and sweet’ is a wonderful way to describe this Birding Tour that will leave you spellbound.

Rukan was wonderful and we enjoyed his careful driving as well as his company throughout our journey. His English is very good and we had great conversations. It was nice to gain insight into the history and culture of Sri Lanka by speaking with him.
Our safari guide in Yala (Kasun) was the best! We saw 6 leopards and 3 sloth bears over the course of 4 outings. Compliments to him and the driver. I was worried that 4 safaris would not be enough, but that turned out not to be the case with their expert tracking skills.

We really enjoyed most of the lodges, especially Kings Pavilion, Chena Huts and Buckingham Place. Great rooms, service, and restaurants. Both Buckingham and Kings Pavilion surprised Rick with birthday cakes either in our room or at dinner. Buckingham also had a special table set up for us with flowers and decorations and the staff presented a birthday card signed by all of them!

All the food was wonderful both at the buffets and when ordering a la carte from menus. Pack meals during safaris were also very good with plenty of variety.

We both had a great time in your beautiful country. Thank you for all your help in planning this adventure. I would definitely recommend Eco Tours to my friends and family if they ever want to visit Sri Lanka. You really made us feel special.
