Bird Watching at Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
AVAILABILITY: Throughout the Year
TOUR OPTIONS: Early Morning or Evening Ferry Rides and Nature Walks
Kalametiya is a coastal wetland area that is situated on the picturesque southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. This park is famous for being a birdwatching haven and records about 150 species of birds. There are four nationally threatened birds found within the sanctuary – Indian Reef Heron, Glossy Ibis, Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl and Black-capped Purple Kingfisher, with Jungle Fowl being the only endemic species.
Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is quite close to Yala National Park, which can be included in your itinerary if you fancy a safari down Yala’s wild dirt roads.
An excursion to Kalametiya will give you the opportunity to interact with the local community and learn about how they live and co-exist with the flora and fauna.
Wildlife Tours Sri Lanka is the leading Birding company in Sri Lanka and we provide visitors with a wide range of birding tours around the country. All of our tours are handled by an experienced naturalist who helps you spot birds and other inhabitants while giving you an in-depth description of the park and its history.
