Three-Day Birding Tour Colombo
Tour Description
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Waikkal
You will meet the Wild Life Tour Sri Lanka staff along with your guide/naturalist at the pre-designated location. Waikkal is located in the Puttalam District, which falls under the dry zone category. Waikkal is in the midst of marine, coastal, estuarine, mangroves, marshland and man-made habitat systems. All of these have contributed to the avifaunal diversity visible in the immediate surroundings. Much of the avifauna is characteristically wetland and more than 60 species of birds can be observed here. Depending on your time of arrival, you can choose to rest at your hotel in Waikkal or do a short bird-watching trail with your personal guide.
Day 2: Waikkal - Negombo - Waikkal
You will be doing a pre-breakfast Birding Tour in a boat to see the birds that inhabit this terrain. They include Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Purple Coot, Painted Stork and Stork-Billed Kingfisher.
After you join the birding boat excursion at Waikkal, you will be transferred to Negombo. The evening excursion begins at 4 p.m. You will be warmly greeted by our staff and briefed on the two-hour programme by your guide/naturalist before entering the wetlands. There, you will be able to witness first-hand, the reasons why the Muthurajawela sanctuary is renowned as one of the best natural habitats closer to the capital city of Colombo. Home to a dazzling array of birds, mammals, reptiles and flora, this natural haven is a hotspot for all those with a love for the wild.
It is considered one of the most important places in Sri Lanka in terms of flora and is a hotspot for botanists and plan enthusiasts. According to Biodiversity reports, 209 fauna varieties were identified in the sanctuary along with 17 endemic types and 26 nationally-threatened varieties. At the end of the excursion, you will be taken to the hotel in Waikkal, for your overnight stay.

BIrds the: the White Ibis, Egret, Stalk,Open-bill, Great cormorant, Purple swamp-hen and the Pheasant tailed Jacana.
